Play Equipment Grant
Wick Community Council have been successful in obtaining a Play Equipment Grant of £1588.17 and will this be used to supplement play equipment used by Wick Youth Club. The equipment is also available for use at birthday parties and other celebrations held at the sports pavilion, so contact the clerk for further information.
November 2021
Pizza Oven
The Community Council have received a new pizza oven from section 106 funds. Work is still required to construct a plinth to support the oven, but we are hopeful that the oven will be up and running soon. The oven will be located close to the sports pavilion, and subject to training will be available for the community to use.

Speeding Vehicles
Residents have told us they often feel upset and angry when walking along the main road in Wick because of speeding traffic passing though the village, and those living close to the main road feel that the quality of their lives has deteriorated over the last 5 years due to the increase in speeding traffic.

Opening of the Multi Use games Area (Date: August 2021)
Our Multi Use games area, funded from ‘Section 106’ money, i.e. a contribution to the community, paid by the developer of the new housing at St James Gardens, was completed earlier this year, and it has proved to be a great success with the young people of the Village.
The Community Council is pleased to support activities for our children and young people, particularly during the summer months when travelling out to activities can be difficult for some. Each year the Community Council works with other organisations to ensure play and other activities take place throughout the holidays.
This year was no exception and long before the Welsh Government’s announcement of a ‘Summer of Fun’ we had already made our own arrangements for this year.
We informed the Children’s Commissioners Office of our plans and we were delighted when Professor Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales confirmed that she would like to visit us to see what we do and that she agreed to open the newly completed Games Area at the same time.
On Wednesday 11th August the Prof Holland spent several hours at the Sport’s Field talking to many children, young people and parents and seeing at first hand the work the Play Rangers and Wick Youth Club volunteers were doing. She also tried out the newly re-painted obstacle course for children recently completed by Wick Fete Committee members.
Whilst welcoming Prof. Holland to Wick Community Council Chair, Cllr David Ambrose paid tribute to all those who were working so hard to make the Summer of Fun activities in Wick a success.
Whilst here Prof Holland took the opportunity to formally declare ‘Open’ the Multi Use Games area. There were already children inside using the facilities and in cutting the ribbon the Commissioner ‘let them out’ and spoke highly of the work which goes on in our village to support children and young people, particularly at this difficult time.

Wick Community Council is delighted to announce that we are having a special visitor to the Summer of Fun Play activities this year.
On Wednesday 11th August, Professor Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales will be visiting between 4.00pm and 5.00pm to speak to children and young people attending the Wick Youth Club Summer of Fun activities at the Sport’s Field and to OPEN our newly completed Multi Use Games Area.
Last year we were one of the few areas that ran summer activities for Children and Young People and we’re delighted that all of Wales will be following our example this year as part of the Children’s Commissioners Summer of Fun programme.
Sally especially wants to talk to the children and young people of the Village and surrounding areas. All welcome to come for a chat.
Summer of Fun activities in Wick (Date: July 2021)
The various lockdowns over the past 16 months have affected many in our community, including our children and young people.
Last summer, as the first lockdown was relaxed, the Summer Play Project facilitated by Wick Community Council was a great success and all those involved in it were able to report on the positive affect the project had for our children, young people and parents.
Wick Community Council is delighted to announce that, working in conjunction with the Vale Play Rangers, Play Wales and Wick Youth Club a Summer of Fun, as called for by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, will return to Wick this Summer Holiday.
Starting on Wednesday 21st July and continuing every Wednesday afternoon from 2.00pm to 4.00pm through the Summer Holidays, the Play Rangers will be delivering play activities for children aged 4 to 11 years of age and this will be followed by Wick Youth Club continuing games and other activities for children and young people aged 7 plus until 7.00pm.
The Play Rangers on the 21st June will promoting the rest of their programme and supporting Wick Youth Club’s Challenge 21 activity. No booking is needed for the 21st July but for Play Rangers from 28th July to 25th August places should be booked via this link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/163196355693 Booking is not required for the youth club sessions.
Wick Community Council has been fortunate to secure a further grant from Welsh Government to purchase equipment to support play activities and Wick Youth Club had a similar grant from Glamorgan Voluntary Services. This equipment and our newly completed Multi Use Games Area will be put to good use throughout our Summer of Fun activities.

Public Benches in Wick (Date: July 2021)
Benches throughout the village are currently being refurbished, and this work will continue throughout the summer. The Community Council having agreed a contract with the Vale of Glamorgan County Council for annual maintenance.
The contact was approved by Councillors in March 2021, but does not include benches located on the village green that are privately owned.
The Community Council is also investigating the restoration of a bench that is located on Broughton Road, and in August a new picnic bench will be installed alongside the recently opened MUGA (multi-use games area) on the rugby field.

Submission of Accounts to Audit Wales
Many councils in Wales were late submitting their annual audit due to the pandemic, and Audit Wales are now dealing with a large backlog. However, Wick Community Council submitted their audits for year-end 2020 and 2021 well before the end of the permitted date, and are hopeful of an receiving an opinion from Audit Wales soon.

Public Benches in Wick (Date: January 2021)
In July last year Wick Community Council discussed public benches in the village, and agreed that they should be brought up to a good standard, as several required repair, and others refurbishment.
Due to the pandemic, no work has been carried out, however, at our last meeting in December 2020, it was agreed to carry out a survey of the benches, and to establish what work was required.
This survey has now been completed, and the Council has now approved a number of recommendations.
These are listed below:
- Appoint a carpenter/handyman to provide a quotation, and carry out necessary work to benches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6 and 7.
- Contact the owners of the two memorial benches, and ascertain their intention or wishes regarding maintenance of the benches.
- Dispose of and replace the damaged picnic bench at the Pavilion.
- Take no action in respect of the bench on Broughton Road.
